Last Saturday marked significant matches within our league community, including the George Thomas Plate and Vygon Challenge Cup finals. Despite the challenging weather conditions throughout the 2024-25 season, S&DCFL acknowledges the exceptional efforts made by all teams and officials to ensure that matches were played across the season.
George Thomas Knockout Plate Final
Saturday morning commenced with a 10:30 AM kick-off at Webbswood Stadium, where division one teams Cricklade Town FC Reserves and Redhouse FC Reserves competed for the 2024-25 George Thomas Knockout Plate title. Beyond the final score, both teams deserve commendation for their endurance and sportsmanship. Although Redhouse was unable to score, they exhibited considerable strength in the second half, ultimately preventing Cricklade from increasing their lead. Under the supervision of head match official Richard Fourarce, Cricklade secured a victory with a final score of 4-0.

Vygon Challenge Cup Final
Following a brief interval before the Vygon Challenge Cup final’s 2:30 PM kick-off, supporters from both Bassett Bulldogs FC and Blunsdon FC Reserves comfortably gathered around three sides of the pitch, enjoying refreshments from the Webbswood Stadium Cafe and Bar. S&DCFL President, Pete Mildenhall extended special thanks to “…the directors, officers, catering, bar, and ground staff at Supermarine, for their hospitality and use of their stadium and facilities.”
The first half saw Blunsdon quickly take the lead with the opening goal. However, Bassett Bulldogs promptly equalised before halftime. Both teams returned for a competitive second half, adding additional points to the board. In a remarkable display, Bassett Bulldogs secured the winning goal through what appeared to be a gravity-defying bicycle kick, with a final score 3-2. Match official, Ion Valentin Stancu remarked, “It was a tough game and both teams played proper football.”

Finally, S&DCFL thanks all our community teams and volunteers for supporting the league’s grassroots initiatives and we look forward to seeing your returned support for many seasons ahead.
