Swindon & District Football League Unveils New Name and Badge in Community-Focused Rebrand
In a significant move to strengthen its connection with the local community, the Swindon & District Football League has announced a rebrand, unveiling its new name: The Swindon & District Community Football League.
This change, which emphasizes the league’s commitment to fostering community spirit, marks a fresh chapter in its long-standing history within the region.
Building Closer Ties with the Community
The decision to incorporate “Community” into the league’s name reflects a broader mission to become more than just a football competition. It’s about bringing people together, encouraging local engagement, and ensuring that football continues to be a vital part of Swindon’s social fabric.
The league’s leadership believes that this change will help deepen relationships with fans, players, and residents, aligning the league’s identity more closely with the values of unity and inclusiveness that are central to Swindon.
League Chairman, Martyn Rosewell, explained the motivation behind the rebrand:
“Football has always been about more than just the game; it’s about community, camaraderie, and coming together to celebrate the sport we love. By becoming
The Swindon & District Community Football League, we’re making a statement that our roots are firmly planted in the local community. We want everyone in Swindon to feel a part of what we’re doing.“
A Fresh Look: The New League Badge
As part of this rebrand, the league has also refreshed its badge, retaining the iconic Swindon crest from the town’s coat of arms, as a central element.
The updated design pays homage to Swindon’s rich history, while also symbolizing the league’s forward-looking vision.

The Swindon crest is steeped in local heritage, and its elements tell the story of the town’s past and present:
- The Locomotive: The centrepiece of the crest is the Great Western Railway (GWR) 4-2-2 ‘White Horse’ (No. 3029), built in Swindon in 1891. This symbolizes the town’s deep connection to the railway industry, which played a pivotal role in its development.
- Red and Blue Quarters: Representing ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Swindon, these colours illustrate the town’s evolution from its historic roots to its modern-day identity
- The Crescents and Castles: The three crescents come from the coat of arms of the Goddard family, long-time lords of the manor in Old Swindon, while the three castles derive from the Vilett family, whose lands were integral to the founding of ‘New’ Swindon. These elements signify the enduring influence of these families on the town’s history.
- The Mitre: A nod to Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, who was granted Old Town by William the Conqueror in 1066, the mitre connects the town to its ancient past.
- The Winged Wheel: Symbolizing ‘swift travel’ this element is another reference to Swindon’s railway heritage
- The Strong Arm and Crossed Hammers: These represent the motto “Health and Industry” reflecting the industrious spirit of the people of Swindon.
- The Helmet: Surmounting the shield, the helmet indicates the rank of gentlemen and esquires, underlining the dignity and respect associated with the league.
Embracing Tradition and Progress
The refreshed badge and new name encapsulate the league’s respect for tradition while embracing the future. By maintaining the Swindon Crest, the league acknowledges the town’s proud history, while the updated elements signal a renewed focus on community engagement and inclusivity.
The league is confident that these changes will resonate with everyone involved, from players and coaches to fans and local residents.
As the new season approaches, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement, with the rebrand setting the stage for a year where football becomes an even more integral part of Swindon’s community life.
The Swindon & District Community Football League invites everyone to join them in this exciting new era, where the beautiful game continues to bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging and pride across the town.
