It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Mr. Leslie James Avis, who passed away on the 20th of August, 2023, at the age of 67. Leslie was not just a local referee; he was an integral part of the footballing fabric that enriched our lives during the 80s and 90s.
His presence on the field, warm personality, and dedication to the game will forever be etched in our memories.
Leslie’s love for football was undeniable, but perhaps only eclipsed by his unwavering devotion to his beloved Arsenal. He was more than a fan; he was a passionate supporter who lived and breathed for the Gunners.
His enthusiasm for the sport and the club was infectious, and he never hesitated to share his extensive knowledge and opinions about the beautiful game. Whether Arsenal won or lost, Leslie’s spirit remained undeterred, and his loyalty never wavered.
As a local referee, Leslie contributed immeasurably to the Swindon & District League. His commitment to ensuring fair play and sportsmanship was evident in every match he officiated. Leslie was more than just an official; he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend to many players and fellow referees.
His larger-than-life character and jovial demeanour on the field made him a beloved figure, earning respect and admiration from all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
In the world of sports, referees often bear the brunt of criticism, but Leslie James Avis was the exception. His fair and unbiased decisions on the field earned him the respect of players, coaches, and spectators alike.
Leslie’s presence during matches was a reassuring one; his calls were made with integrity and without bias, ensuring that every game he officiated was a fair contest.
Leslie’s funeral will take place on Tuesday, the 26th of September, at 12:45 pm at Kingsdown Crematorium in Swindon, SN25 6SG. It is an opportunity for all who knew him to come together and pay their final respects to a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on the local footballing community.
The family are hoping to find a picture or two of Leslie in his referee uniform or in action on the field, so if anyone does have any tucked away, please forward them on to the league committee who will pass them on to the family.
