Weekend Preview – 8th Feb 2020

This weekend sees a few teams playing in the Quarter Final of the Wilts cup which is the district level equivalent of the Champions League.

The tie of the round is a repeat of last season’s Quarter Final as Blunsdon make the trip to Trowbridge League’s Three Daggers FC. Three Daggers had an impressive scalp in the previous round knocking out current Swindon District Premier leaders The Globe, so it should be a nice even contest.

Ian Rosewell the Blunsdon manager had this to say about the tie
If we turn up and play the football I know we are capable of, I’m always confident we can beat any team but at the same time we can’t go out complacent.

We did beat them 3-2 in 90 minuets in the quarter finals of last seasons competition, so that gives you confidence that you can do it again but as they play in the Trowbridge and district league we don’t really know much about them.

If they have improved in any area’s and they do have the home advantage if there is such a thing in grass roots football. So it really could go either way.

I think the key to Winning the game will be getting at them early on and scoring an early goal(s), I dont want to jinx things but we haven’t lost any games yet this season where we have scored first.

We have unfortunately lost our top goal scorer from last season (Eliot Wheatley) to a foot injury he picked up during a game in January, but fantastically other players have stepped up to the plate in recent weeks, and generally I would say our attacking options are the strongest area of our team.

But being a biggest game of the season so far you would hope/think everybody would want to be or make themselves available to play if possible. I certainly feel this has all the makings to be the tie of the round and very much looking forwards to it.

Either way, it’s agreeable it will be a great game.

Other SDFL teams involved in the county cup

Bassett Bulldogs vs Mere Town
Ruby Removals vs Ramsbury

PREMIER DIVISION

The prem sees big games at the top and bottom of the league.

Highworth Development (4th) host Nalgo Sports (5th) with both teams level on points. A win for either side will see them up to 3rd and in those promotion spots for the FA Pyramid Scheme.

At the bottom Regent go in search for their first points of the season as they travel to Wheatsheaf who are on place above them in this bottom of the table clash.

Other games include Ashton Keynes vs Globe where the later are looking to pull away from the chasing pack who are I’m cup action.

Paragon vs Redhouse with both teams fresh off good cup wins

Wroughton Reserves vs Sportz Central. Sportz having caused the upset of the season so far having beaten globe last weekend.

DIVISION 1

The Big game this weekend is at the bottom where Moredon host Down Ampney in huge 6 pointer at the bottom. A win for either team could be the catalyst to push on and move further away from the foot of the table.

Cricklade Reserves have the task to keep leaders Priory Vale at bay this weekend who could potentially be 8 points clear come Saturday evening if results go their way.

That result involves 4th place Centurions home game against 5th place Marlborough Res who have hit a good run of form after a change of managers a few weeks back.

The other games are Swindon AFC vs North Swindon & Spectrum vs Lower Stratton. 2 points separate all 4 teams so a win for either team is vital going into the second half of games in 2020.
