Old Town United this weekend managed to pull off an extraordinary comeback against Moredon FC, by coming from 4-0 behind to eventually winning 7-4.
They have suffered from a lack of starting players this season but are not letting it come between them and the league title.
Manager Chris Wood acknowledges the difficulty of juggling football each week with work and families, but believes that their mental strength and belief in themselves as a team played a hand in this seemingly impossible task.
Starting with only 9 players, the first half of the match looked very much like Moredon were going to take the win. However, with a full squad on the field in the second half, it was a completely different story. With goals coming straight off the bat, their confidence grew.
“We obviously changed our formation and went more attacking than usual with 3-5-2, and the first goal came within a few minutes of the second half,” Wood said.
“At half-time, we knew, 11 on 11, we were the better side. I don’t think there was a single player who didn’t think we would get anything from that game”
“I didn’t expect it to come as easily as it did. It keeps us four points ahead at the top, which is crucial. The last thing we needed to do was drop points.”
Despite the set backs of the season, Wood’s is confident that if they continue to play this way they can win the league.
”Every team has a season defining moment. We have had a few so far this season and have come through some tough times, yet we still find ourselves at the top of the table”
Sport4Pinehurst are hot on their heels with a game in hand but Wood’s is not too concerned.
”Sport4Pinehurst are our closest rivals. They play good football so were always going to be around us in the league table. Having said that, they have some big games coming up that might prove to be very difficult for them” he said
”But anyting can happen in football” he added ”All I know is my players are playing well and I’m confident that we can win the league”
Old Town are also in the running for the Advertiser Cup, playing in the semi final on the 4th March.
